The disgusting ones will remain disgusting — no matter what’s going on in this world.
A new report in the New York Post states that landlords are sexually harassing tenants, especially the ones who are strapped for cash. Some are coercing them into “sex-for-rent” agreements to continue living in their homes.
Cities and states are seeing a rise in sexual harassment reports. Hawaii has seen ten complaints, more cases they have seen in the last two years. In Chicago, a legal aid said that her organization has seen a “threefold increase” in housing-related sexual harassment complaints over the past month.
“We have seen an uptick in sexual harassment,” said Sheryl Ring, the Chicago legal aid. “Since this started, [landlords] have been taking advantage of the financial hardships many of their tenants have in order to coerce their tenants into a sex-for-rent agreement — which is absolutely illegal.”
Women are becoming incredibly vulnerable as many are losing work and continue to have financial struggles.
Ring is urging anyone who is being sexually harassed by their landlord to remain strong and do not give in to their demands.
“It’s important to know what your rights are as quickly as possible,” she said. “Even now, just because courts are closed to most things, it doesn’t mean you do not have recourse right now and can’t be protected.”
